Our Approach to Pet Cancer Care

At Angel Care, our integrative oncology services combine the best of conventional veterinary medicine with complementary therapies to provide comprehensive cancer care for your pet. Led by Dr. Kathy Mitchener, DVM, our approach focuses on treating the whole animal—not just the cancer—to improve quality of life and overall wellbeing.

Cancer in pets, as in humans, is a complex disease that affects not only the physical body but also impacts emotional wellbeing and daily functioning. Our integrative approach addresses all these aspects, providing support that goes beyond traditional cancer treatments.

Unfortunately, one in five cats and one in four dogs will develop cancer over their lifetime. Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Fortunately, not all pet cancer diagnoses are a death sentence—especially with proper care and treatment focused on quality of life.

We believe in personalized care plans that consider your pet’s specific type of cancer, overall health status, age, and quality of life goals. Whether your pet is undergoing conventional cancer treatments elsewhere or you’re seeking alternative approaches, our integrative oncology services can provide valuable support throughout your pet’s cancer journey.

Common Cancers in Companion Animals

Lymphoma is the most common cancer in dogs, making up 20% of all canine cancer cases. It affects the lymphatic system—a network of tissues and glands that circulate lymph through the body to support immunity.

Signs to watch for: Swollen lymph nodes, lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss, increased thirst and urination.

Treatment response: About 85% of dogs who receive treatment for lymphoma will go into remission. Most dogs tolerate chemotherapy well with minimal side effects.

<p>Mast cell tumors are one of the most common skin tumors in dogs. Certain breeds like boxers, shar-peis, bull terriers, and bulldogs are more susceptible.</p>
<p><strong>Signs to watch for:</strong> Skin nodules (often on head, neck, or ears), itching at the site, vomiting, fatigue, and black stools.</p>
<p><strong>Treatment response:</strong> About 90% of MCTs on the skin are benign. Surgical removal is common treatment, with additional therapy depending on grade.</p>

<p>Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer in dogs, particularly affecting large breeds like Irish wolfhounds and Rottweilers.</p>
<p><strong>Signs to watch for:</strong> Swelling or pain in affected limb, lameness, reluctance to walk or play.</p>
<p><strong>Treatment considerations:</strong> This aggressive cancer often spreads rapidly. Our focus is on pain management and quality of life support.</p>

<p>This fast and deadly cancer occurs in the cells lining blood vessels, usually affecting the spleen, liver, heart, or skin. Golden retrievers, labradors, and German shepherds are more susceptible.</p>
<p><strong>Signs to watch for:</strong> Often no signs until advanced stages, then may see weakness, pale gums, collapse, or distended abdomen.</p>
<p><strong>Treatment considerations:</strong> Our focus is on supportive care and maintaining quality of life for as long as possible.</p>

<p>Mammary (breast) cancer affects primarily female dogs, especially those who were spayed after their first heat cycle.</p>
<p><strong>Signs to watch for:</strong> Lumps or masses along the mammary chain.</p>
<p><strong>Treatment response:</strong> Early detection and treatment can lead to good outcomes in many cases.</p>

Our Integrative Cancer Treatments

Herbal and Nutritional Supplements

Carefully selected herbs and supplements can support your pet’s body during cancer treatment. Our protocols may include:

  • Antioxidants to protect healthy cells
  • Immune-modulating herbs to support the body’s natural defenses
  • Anti-inflammatory supplements to reduce cancer-related inflammation
  • Adaptogenic herbs to help the body cope with stress
  • Specific supplements targeted to your pet’s particular cancer type

All supplements are carefully evaluated for quality, safety, and potential interactions with other treatments your pet may be receiving.

Laser Therapy

Our Class IV therapeutic laser can be beneficial for pets with cancer by:

  • Reducing pain and inflammation
  • Accelerating healing of surgical sites
  • Improving circulation to tissues
  • Enhancing cellular metabolism
  • Providing comfort for pets with cancer-related discomfort

Laser therapy is non-invasive, painless, and can be particularly helpful for managing secondary issues that arise during cancer treatment.

Pain Management Protocols

Comprehensive pain management is essential for pets with cancer. Our multimodal approach may include:

Acupuncture and laser therapy for natural pain relief
Appropriate pharmaceutical interventions when necessary
Physical medicine techniques
Environmental modifications for comfort
Rehabilitation exercises to maintain function

We regularly assess your pet’s comfort level and adjust our pain management strategies as needed to ensure the best possible quality of life

Nutritional Support for Cancer Patients

Nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting pets with cancer. We develop customized nutritional plans that address the unique needs of cancer patients, helping to maintain strength, support immune function, and enhance quality of life.

Our nutritional approach for pets with cancer focuses on:

  • Adequate protein to prevent muscle wasting and support immune function
  • Balanced fatty acids to manage inflammation and support cellular health
  • Appropriate carbohydrates to provide energy while potentially limiting those that may feed cancer cells
  • Key vitamins and minerals to support overall health and cellular function
  • Antioxidants carefully timed around treatments to protect healthy cells

We also address common nutritional challenges like:

  • Decreased appetite with strategies to stimulate eating
  • Nausea and digestive issues with easily digestible food options
  • Weight loss with nutrient-dense foods to maintain healthy body weight
  • Taste changes with a variety of food options to accommodate preferences

Our goal is to make nutrition a positive part of your pet’s cancer care, supporting their body’s natural healing abilities while maintaining the joy of eating.
